Me Being Me is Exactly as Insane as You Being You - Pg 98

10 Things Darren Does with a Particular Book After Putting Away the Legos Bin and Changing into His Outfit for the Concert but Before Showing Up at School

1. GRABS IT
He scans the titles quickly and for some reason grabs When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times.

8. STARTS LEAFING THROUGH IT
Darren is pretty determined not to actually read it. He's just holing the edge of it with his right thumb and flipping through the pages. Maybe he's hoping for a useful summary of his dad or his own situation or the whole entire world to appear to him highlighted in very simple language on page seventy-four or something.

4. A photograph on the refrigerator of his dad and three other guys (Mike, Gary, and some guy wearing a fanny pack whose name Dareen can't remember) at the end of some wooden pier with the sun setting off to the right of his dad and the water totally still and smooth and dark, dark blue, with everyone looking not so much happy as just really, really content.

Something happens with her eyes, the irises of which are almost perfectly black. The thing that happens lasts maybe two seconds, and as soon as it's over Darren knows he'll never be able to explain to anyone, even though he might try later with Nate.
What happens is that her eyes do something that somehow tells him, or makes him feel, even, that there's an entire person connected to these eyes. Which isn't exactly a surprise, because obviously Zoey is an entire person, but so maybe what happens is that her eyes remind him of this. Or ask him to really think about what this means. That she's an entire person. Her eyes tell him, by opening a little more than normal and almost reaching out to his, something like, I know I barely talk and pretty much act like I'm not even here, but I'm totally here and have a million things to say, and me being me is exactly as insane as you being you.

Or something like that.

Whenever Emily puts on her oversize safety goggles, and only then, Darren feels an urge to lift her up in his arms, carry her to the school gymnasium, lay her down softly on a red tumbling mat, smooth out her shiny hair with his thick hand, and tell her that he could love her forever, probably.

   4. It is a rotten world in many ways. In too many ways. But the world isn't only rotten, even if it's actively rotting right this very instant. Yes, I am quite certain there are still some perfectly good spots, some terrific people, some things utterly unrotted. They're out there, I know it.
